DREIER TAKES MORE THAN $12,000 FROM SUB-PRIME LENDER,
VOTES AGAINST HELP FOR HOMEOWNERS

Warner: "Everyone - except those in Washington - can see what's wrong with this picture."

Rancho Cucamonga - Congressman David Dreier has taken over $12,000 in campaign contributions from the sub-prime lender Countrywide.  And it looks like their money was well spent - after accepting the funds, Dreier voted against H Con Res 312 - a provision of which creates a reserve fund for affordable housing, which would be paid for through proposed lending reforms.  [H.R. 312, #141 <http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2008/roll141.xml> , 3/13/08]

"This is a clear example of what's wrong with Washington," said Russ Warner, Democratic candidate for Congress in California's 26th district.  "Even in the middle of a mortgage crisis, David Dreier is taking money from sub-prime lobbyists and then refusing to help those they prey upon.  Everyone - except those in Washington - can see what's wrong with this picture."

And this isn't the first time Dreier has voted with predatory lenders against the interests of everyday Americans.  In September of last year, Dreier voted against giving the Federal Housing Authority the ability to help more homeowners in crisis.  The bill passed the House, 348 to 72, over his objections. [H.R. 1852, http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2007/roll876.xml, 9/18/07]

"Dreier's decision to protect the mortgage industry at the expense of America's homeowners is hitting people where it hurts," said Kristin Points, Warner's campaign manager.  "The mortgage industry has spent upwards of $200 million lobbying members of Congress to oppose common-sense regulation of its lending practices.  They pay David Dreier, and America pays the price."

"Californians deserve better than government-by-lobbyists," Warner said.  "In Congress I'll vote to protect the people I represent, not special interests."

Russ Warner is a small businessman who has lived in the 26th district for 27 years with his wife, Kris, and their three sons.  Greg, their eldest, is in the U.S. Army and served in Iraq for seventeen months.  Upon his return home from the war, Greg challenged his father to make a difference by running for Congress.
