DREIER VOTES AGAINST HOMEOWNERS TWICE IN ONE DAY
Warner: "Dreier's series of ‘no' votes = no leadership on foreclosure crisis."
Rancho Cucamonga - Congressman David Dreier sided twice today with subprime lenders and against American homeowners. Dreier first voted against the Neighborhood Stabilization Act, which allows states to protect property values by acquiring vacant, foreclosed homes and rehabilitating them. Later in the afternoon, Dreier got his second wind and voted against the American Housing Rescue and Foreclosure Prevention Act, which provides mortgage refinancing assistance and will keep an estimated 500,000 families from losing their homes. He was on the losing side of both votes.
"I would have voted differently on both of these bills," said Russ Warner, Democratic Congressional candidate in California's 26th district. "When a home is foreclosed upon, the effect ripples through the community, lowering property values and potentially attracting crime. We need a comprehensive plan to protect our neighborhoods and strengthen the economy, and what we're getting from David Dreier is a series of ‘no' votes. That's not leadership."
But Dreier's votes aren't completely inexplicable - he has taken over $12,000 in campaign contributions from the sub-prime lender Countrywide. And this is far from the first time he's put the mortgage industry before the American homeowner.
"This is actually the fourth time this session that David Dreier has prioritized subprime lenders over Southern Californians," said Kristin Points, Warner's campaign manager. Below is a list of those votes:
1. In September of last year, Dreier voted against giving the Federal Housing Authority the ability to help more homeowners in crisis. The bill passed the House, 348 to 72, over his objections. [H.R. 1852, http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2007/roll876.xml, 9/18/07]
2. Earlier this year, Dreier voted against H Con Res 312 - a provision of which creates a reserve fund for affordable housing, which would be paid for through proposed lending reforms. [H.R. 312, #141 <http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2008/roll141.xml> , 3/13/08]
3. May 8, 2008: Drier votes against the Neighborhood Stabilization Act of 2008. [H.R. 5818, http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2008/roll299.xml, 5/8/08]
4. May 8, 2008: Dreier votes against the American Housing Rescue and Foreclosure Prevention Act of 2008. [H.R. 3221, http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2008/roll301.xml 5/8/08]
