Russ Warner Thanks Local Veterans for Their Service and Challenges Bush and Dreier to Make Veterans' Issues a Priority

"Every veteran deserves the medical care and benefits they were promised," said Russ Warner.

November 12, 2007 (Rancho Cucamonga) Russ Warner, a Democrat running for Congress in California's 26th district, spent the weekend traveling across the district and surrounding areas, hearing veterans' stories and thanking them for their service to our country.

"My son Greg, an Iraq war veteran, motivated me to run for Congress. I am incredibly thankful for his and your service to our country," Warner said to a group of veterans at a forum on Saturday.

Warner called on President Bush and Congressman David Dreier to make veterans' needs, including health care, a priority.

"Dreier¹s record on veterans¹ issues speaks for itself," said Warner.  Dreier voted five times to cut veterans¹ benefits between 2003 and 2005, which included voting to cut health insurance, disability pay and the GI Bill. He also voted against giving extra job training to returning veterans and against expanding military health insurance for National Guards and Reserves.

"David Dreier continues to support the war in Iraq, which costs us nearly $450 billion, but he is not willing to invest in the welfare of our veterans who risk everything through their service," Warner said. "I will make it a priority to not only give our military the appropriate resources they need while in active duty, but the health care and benefits they deserve when they return."

Warner announced his run for Congress in June, saying he is taking on the fight because the war in Iraq must be stopped and because America needs new leadership with fewer career politicians like Dreier. The devastating cost of the war was brought home to Warner and his family in a personal way.  Warner's son Greg served in Iraq for seventeen months.
