Tax Day A Reminder of War’s Cost
Tax Day A Reminder of War's Cost
Dreier Consistently Supports Billions in Spending on Iraq War
Rancho Cucamonga - Today's federal tax filing deadline serves as a reminder of the cost of the war and the trade-offs made, says Russ Warner, Democratic candidate for California's 26th congressional seat.
"Each household in America will spend an average of $4,681 financing the war in Iraq according to the Congressional Budget office," Warner said. "Rep. David Dreier has supported President Bush and his management of this war every step of the way - so on a day like today, it's fair to ask what we could have paid for instead."
In 2007, the 26th district contributed more than $400 million dollars to the war in Iraq. For that money, we could have done any of the following:
- Fitted every home in the district with renewable electricity
- Provided 149,699 uninsured children with health care
- Provided 164,829 uninsured adults with health care
- Put 7,154 additional public safety officers on our streets
- Hired an additional 5,752 elementary school teachers
- Hired an additional 5,657 music and arts teachers
- Provided 60,185 full college scholarships for our students
- Built 40 new elementary schools
- Built 1,199 new affordable housing units
"Dreier and Bush have the wrong priorities - and it's costing us," Warner said. " When I'm in Congress, I'll push to swiftly and responsibly redeploy our troops, so we can bring them home and start investing in our communities."
Warner is endorsed by the California Democratic Party and raised more than $500,000 in contributions, which is by far the most money raised by any Democratic challenger who has faced Dreier since he was first elected to Congress in 1980. In addition, he has earned the support of numerous community and political leaders, including Congresswoman Hilda Solis and Congressman Adam Schiff.
Recently, Warner received the endorsement of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, which represents more than 845,000 workers in Los Angeles County. He has lived in the district for nearly 27 years with his wife, Kris, and their three sons. Greg, their eldest, is in the U.S. Army and served in Iraq for seventeen months. Upon his return home from the war, Greg challenged his father to make a difference by running for Congress. Warner believes we need new leadership with new priorities to represent the values of the 26th District.
